Community notebook: Youth soccer teams reach semifinals

Coaches for local soccer teams participating in the Commissioners’ Cup semifinals are encouraged to submit match results to The Columbian. Results, with game highlights, can be sent by e-mail to paul.danzer@columbian.com. Deadline: Noon on Monday, Feb. 22.

Ten youth soccer teams from Clark County advanced to the semifinal round of the Fred Meyer Commissioners’ Cup state tournament.

In the age division for boys under 18, three of the four semifinal teams are from Clark County.

The Commissioners’ Cup is the largest of three state tournaments staged annually by Washington Youth Soccer. The tournament is open to competitive teams, except for higher-level premier clubs.

The tournament began with round-robin play in January for most age groups, and moved into the elimination phase. The quarterfinal matches were played Saturday and Sunday with the winners advancing to semifinal matches on Feb. 20-21.

In the boys under-18 quarterfinals, Vancouver United defeated the Tusk Titans 4-0 with Cameron Foster, Michael Takayoshi, Jeff Garbarino, and Jeff Carmody scoring goals.

Vancouver United will face the Tri-Mountain Avalanche in one semifinal match. The Avalanche earned bye into the semifinals based on pool-play results.

Also earning a bye into the semifinals were the Camas-Washougal Fire, which will face the Fife-Milton-Edgewood Sharks in the other boys U18 semifinal.

In the boys under-12 age group, the Chinook Fire-Falatovich squad defeated the Lake Hills Impact on penalty kicks to advance.

Keeper Jack Bloss made two stops in the shootout. Including the match and the shootout, Chinook goals were scored by Richard Lu (two), Magnus Kofoed, Nathan Behrens, Josh Polen, Max Smith and Ian Sanders.

The Fire will face the NK Comets on Feb. 20 in the semifinals in Tukwila.

In the boys under-11 division, the Chinook Fire-Burris team beat Westside United Black 1-0, and the Vancouver United Blue beat Westside United Cobb 2-1 to advance.

In the girls under-11 division, the Prairie Ice beat the South Hill Revolution 1-0 in the quarterfinals. Two other Clark county teams lost quarterfinal matches.

In the boys under-14 bracket, the Tri-Mountain Strikers advanced with a 2-1 win over the Thunder. In the girls under-14 division, F.C. Salmon Creek Nemesis advanced with a 1-0 win over the Lake Hills Storm.

In boys under-16 play, the Chinook Fire reached the semifinals with a 1-0 win over Crossfire Select.

Kid wrestlers triumph

Three members of the Southwest Washington Wrestling Club won titles at the Washington State Folkstyle Championships on Jan. 30-31 in Spokane.

Earning championships were Tommy Strassenberg (novice, 85 pounds), Tyler Wicken (Schoolboy/girl, 105 pounds), and Zach Wardel (Schoolboy/girl, 210 pounds).

A list of local wrestlers who placed and participated in the state folkstyle tournament is in the Community Sports Scoreboard.

Equestrian results posted

Results for the Prairie High School equestrian team from its first meet of the season are in the Community Sports Scoreboard.

The first meet of the Washington High School Equestrian Team season was held Jan. 29-31 in Elma. The season contines through the spring.
