Weather Eye: As the song says, might as well be spring

The sun is shining, my face is smiling — well, at least until I glance at the grass in my yard, because it is a-growing! If my trusty gardener is reading this, it is just about time to stop by and pay a visit. Our February break continues as strong high pressure holds over the region.

Yes, there was a bit of frost in the wind-sheltered locations but nothing real bad as temperatures warmed quickly with the rising sun. At 2 p.m. Saturday, it was 60 degrees in Vancouver despite a brisk east wind. And that 60 degrees held clear to the ocean beaches. We are enjoying more daylight each day as the sun continues its northward journey. Nature does seem to be about three weeks ahead of itself.

Although predictions of a warm, dry March still stand, we can hope for a cool and wet spring in the mountains to add to the dwindling snow pack.

Vancouver has really gone into the red as far as our monthly rainfall total goes. We are now 1.27 inches below average for the month, with only 2.28 inches falling at Pearson. The year’s total isn’t quite as bad with 9.19 inches since January 1 — down just 0.54 of an inch, thanks to those heavy rains in early January.

What’s up with these mild temperatures in the usually bleak month of February? The average mean temperature in Vancouver has been 47.6 degrees — some six degrees above average. I do believe we are off and running with springtime even though I know we will have a few surprises as spring lies upon us. We usually do, however lamblike it may be so far.
