PORT ANGELES, Wash. (AP) — A state audit indicates a cashier in the Clallam County treasurer’s office embezzled at least $617,000.

The audit report released Tuesday is now in the hands of Port Angeles police detectives who are investigating.

The Peninsula Daily News reports the employee was in charge of processing real estate excise taxes, preparing daily cash deposits and tax affidavits.

An investigation began in May and the cashier was fired in June.

The audit says lax procedures in the treasurer’s office allowed the employee to manipulate transactions and misappropriate funds.

Treasure Judy Scott says she has made changes to prevent similar thefts.
