A fund has been set up to help defray medical costs for a Vancouver woman attacked by two pit bulls on Monday.

Amber Hart and her boyfriend ran to help a neighbor at a residence in the 14100 block of Northeast 18th Street. The couple arrived shortly after 7 a.m. to find two pit bulls chasing cattle. The dogs quickly redirected their attention to Hart, pinning her against a fence and biting at her legs.

For more than an hour the two dogs were “running amok,” a police dispatcher said Monday.

The dogs were corralled by members of the Vancouver Police Department and Clark County Animal Control near a property in the 10500 block of Northeast Eighth Street.

“She certainly has some injuries,” Vancouver Police Department spokeswoman Kim Kapp said of Hart. “It was going on for about an hour as the dogs were running through a couple apartment complexes.”

Hart received stitches in her thigh and foot, according to Portland Fox affiliate KPTV-12. She was treated and released Monday from Southwest Washington Medical Center.

Hart could not be reached for comment Wednesday night.

The dogs are under quarantine at the Humane Society for Southwest Washington.

It is standard procedure to place a dog under quarantine after a bite to watch for signs of rabies, said Lisa Feder, the Humane Society’s director of operations. Feder added it’s “highly unlikely” the dogs have the disease.

An owner has yet to claim the dogs and it’s likely the two pit bulls will be put down if no one comes forward, Feder said.

“It all depends on whether an owner comes forward or not,” Feder said.

A fund for Hart, who does not have health insurance, was set up at area U.S. Bank branches. Donations can be made to the Amber Hart medical fund.
