Weather eye: Rain and showers equal a wet forecast

Rain and showers, showers and rain, what’s the difference? Yeah, I know, rain is continuous and showers are intermittent. Both get you wet and both can get you down. And both are in the forecast for later today and Friday, maybe lingering into early Saturday. Sunday, at this point, looks dry.

The mountains got a little snow Tuesday and Wednesday with 5 to 10 inches of some good powder at the higher slopes. Still, Cascade passes should receive some snow Friday with those showers, but a bit on the wetter side of things. That’s OK; we’ll take all we can get in any fashion. The last few days of winter are upon us; while spring officially begins March 20, we weather and climate folks consider March 1 the start of the spring weather season.

One reader commented that on her early morning walk Wednesday, the sidewalks were speckled with crawling earthworms out enjoying the abundant moisture. Other readers have commented on the audacity of spiders around the house — a somewhat not-so-common sight in wintertime. I guess they have come out of hibernation a bit early this year, as everything else is running about three weeks early or so.

I saw the most brilliant rainbow the other day while looking over the top of a profusely flowering cherry tree. And I had to take a double look at a couple of red and yellow tulips in full bloom. If this trend continues, the tulip festivals in April may have a bit less color. We may be able to sneak the lamb into our weather scene on the first day of March on Monday. That’s OK with me; we’ll save the lion for later on. Enjoy your weekend.
