OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — The president of the faculty union at Western Washington University says the state’s higher education community demonstrated their unity in Olympia on Thursday.

Steve Garfinkle says students, professors, university presidents and regents gathered with a group of lawmakers to let them know everyone in the state’s universities and community and technical colleges want the same things from the Legislature.

They want the state to continue to support quality education from preschool through college. They want needy students to have a dependable source of financial aid. And they want lawmakers to begin the work of bringing back steady financial support for the state’s colleges and universities.

Garfinkle says lawmakers at the gathering acknowledged these are dark times for higher education in Washington.
