Cascade Park: Augusta Evans Carter celebrated her 100th birthday Dec. 27 with about 90 family members and friends at The Bedford retirement home, 13303 S.E. McGillivray Blvd.

She was married for 40 years to Larry Evans, and they had one daughter, Sara Evans Dougherty.

Augusta also had two stepsons, Jack Evans, who is deceased, and Mike Evans. Larry died in 1983.

Augusta was born Dec. 27, 1909, in Mobile, Ala. She moved to Clark County in the late 1990s.

When she was 93, she married Bill Carter, a high school friend whom she had known for 75 years. They moved to Joplin, Mo., and lived there for six years. Bill died in July 2009, and Augusta moved back to Vancouver to be near her daughter and family.

Her daughter said Augusta lived for her first century without many health problems. Her mother has weathered the years with a positive attitude, faith in God, strong independence and had the gift of good friends.

Augusta has eight grandchildren, some step-grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
