BOISE, Idaho (AP) — The Idaho Department of Transportation, wildlife managers and big-game advocates are installing “tally signs” along State Highway 21 to remind drivers to watch for deer and elk that cross this two-lane thoroughfare through the mountains.

The signs, to be installed Wednesday between Lucky Peak Reservoir and Robie Creek, will read “Give Deer & Elk a Brake” and will keep a tally of vehicle-wildlife collisions each year.

Helping on the project are the Department of Fish and Game, Boise, Ada and Boise counties and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.

Officials also plan to construct a $550,000 wildlife crossing underpass and game fence near Robie Creek this spring, funded by the federal stimulus act.

Each year on Highway 21 between Warm Springs Avenue in Boise and Robie Creek, cars collide with up to 100 mule deer and 10 elk.
