BLACKFOOT, Idaho (AP) — A Blackfoot man charged with attempting to kill his wife and two youngest children has waived his right to a preliminary hearing.

The Idaho State Journal reports that 33-year-old Juan Gabriel Rascon is charged with three counts of attempted murder and one count of attempted strangulation in connection with a Dec. 15 car accident. In court records, prosecutors say Rascon told officials he was trying to kill himself and his family when he drove his sport utility vehicle off the road and crashed.

No one was injured in the accident, but prosecutors say Rascon tried to strangle his wife after they exited the vehicle, letting go when passing motorists stopped to help the family.

If convicted, Rascon faces up to 15 years in prison for each charge.
