SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Oregon’s airwaves have been flooded for weeks with TV ads from both sides in the battle over the Legislature’s tax increases.

Now it’s Oregon voters’ turn to have their say. Local election offices have begun shipping two million mail ballots to households for a Jan. 26 referendum election on the $727 million tax package.

Both camps are planning major get-out-the-vote efforts this weekend, with hundreds of volunteers knocking on doors and staffing phone banks.

The Democratic-led Legislature approved the tax hikes on corporations and higher-income earners, saying they were needed to protect schools and other programs from cuts.

Business groups who oppose the tax hikes say they will result in private sector job losses and keep Oregon in recession.
