SALEM, Ore. (AP) — A California truck driver focused on following his GPS back to Interstate 5 has told a Marion County sheriff’s officer he failed to see traffic signs indicating an upcoming railroad trestle was only 11 feet high.

The problem? The trailer on his big rig was 14 feet tall. Lt. Sheila Lorance says Palacios Moises-Flores damaged both his tractor cab and his empty trailer when he attempted to drive under the trestle and got stuck Monday near Salem, Ore.

The uninjured driver told a deputy he knew his trailer was 14 feet tall but was busy looking at his GPS because he was in an unfamiliar area.

Says Lorance, “People rely solely on the GPS and they have to use common sense.” The driver was cited for failure to obey a traffic control device.

The bridge was not damaged but the road was closed for more than two hours while the trailer was pulled free.
