JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A man who tried to bargain his way out of jail by telling investigators he knew of a plot against President Barack Obama has pleaded guilty to a fraud charge.
Ronnie Lee Owen was wanted in eight states, including Mississippi and Louisiana, on fraud or similar charges when he was arrested in Biloxi last March with fake driver’s licenses and phony checks.
He tried to strike a deal with authorities by offering fantastical tales of plotting white supremacist and extremist Mormons.
A Secret Service agent has said the agency checks out every possible threat, but Owen’s case remained about fraud. It doesn’t appear they believed Owen’s tales.
Owen plead guilty Tuesday in federal court in Gulfport, Miss. He will be sentenced April 13.
