HONOLULU (AP) — An unidentified Oregon man has drowned off Maui after he and a companion were caught in a rip tide.

The 49-year-old man’s name is being held pending notification of his next of kin.

The incident occurred Tuesday off Oneloa Beach, also known as Little Beach, near the town of Makena.

Police say the man and a male companion were swimming when they were caught in a rip tide, a strong current that rapidly moves away from the shore. Police say lifeguards brought the two men to the beach but the male victim was not breathing.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was performed but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The friend was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center and is listed in good condition. His name also was not immediately released.
