LOS ANGELES (AP) — Groups that vet charities are raising doubts about the organization backed by Haitian-born rapper Wyclef Jean.
They say the foundation’s questionable accounting practices could hurt its ability to function in earthquake-hit Haiti even as hundreds of thousands of dollars pour in via text message.
The Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance is not recommending Jean’s group and suggests money be donated to relief organizations with more experience in handling disasters.
The 37-year-old Grammy-winning artist has been imploring followers to text “Yele” to 501501 to donate $5 to his foundation in support of Haitian earthquake victims.
Jean has said he wants to raise $1 million a day.
