PHOENIX (AP) — A former University of California-San Diego swimmer from Phoenix was among those killed in the massive earthquake in Haiti.

Family members say 24-year-old Ryan Kloos was visiting the orphanage where his sister Erin works in Petionville when the magnitude-7.0 quake occurred Tuesday and five stories of the Father Wasson Center collapsed.

They say 26-year-old Erin Kloos is now at a Florida hospital receiving treatment for significant injuries to her arms, but her prognosis for recovery is good. She has worked at the Haitian orphanage off and on since 2007 and is a former University of Washington swimmer.

Ryan Kloos’ aunt in Phoenix says he graduated from UC-San Diego in 2008 with degrees in biochemistry and cell biology and planned to start medical school this fall. His friends have already held a vigil at the La Jolla campus to honor his memory.

Ryan and Erin Kloos both attended Phoenix’s Arcadia High School.
