NEW YORK (AP) — A small plane flying a banner has made a safe emergency landing in a landfill on Staten Island that holds wreckage from the Sept. 11 attacks.

New York City police said Friday that the pilot is safe. The two-seater had no other passengers aboard.

The plane did not disturb any debris at the closed Fresh Kills landfill. It landed in the early afternoon after experiencing engine trouble.

The Piper PA 18 is registered to Smoketown Banners LLC out of New Holland, Pa.
