PLUMMER, Idaho (AP) — The Coeur d’Alene Tribe is building a memorial to honor members who served in the military.

The memorial will be built at the trailhead of the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes. Officials say the project is expected to be finished in May or June.

Coeur d’Alene Tribe Chairman Chief Allan says the tribe has a proud tradition of serving the country.

The memorial will be two 8-foot granite columns with an interpretation of the Steptoe Battle and a life-size statue of a tribal warrior riding a horse.

The memorial will include the names of fallen Coeur d’Alene Tribal members.

Tribal officials say they have identified nearly 100 members who fought and died in battles and wars.

The tribe says there are five tribal members currently serving in the U.S. military.
