BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) — Kern County fire officials say a man was killed when strong winds blew a tree onto his home, crushing him in his sleep.

Fire spokesman Sean Collins says the 21-year-old victim was sleeping in his bed Monday morning when the 100-foot-tall tree crashed through the roof of the house Pine Mountain Club, about 60 miles south of Bakersfield.

The National Weather Service reports that the area recorded wind gusts up to 85 mph and about a half-inch of rain.

Collins says firefighters had to use chain saws to remove the victim.

Collins didn’t immediately know if other people were in the house at the time, but no other injuries were reported
