Chris Plooy had 18 points and eight rebounds, and the visiting Green River Gators beat cold-shooting Clark College, 60-57 in an NWAACC men’s basketball game Monday.

Clark shot only 36 percent, including making just 3 of 18 3-pointers, falling to 5-8, 3-2 in West Division play.

To match up with Green River, Clark used a four-guard lineup for much of Monday’s game.

“Our execution left a whole lot to be desired,” Clark coach Mike Arnold said.

Arnold was pleased his team battled back from a 20-point deficit, but noted that missed free throws hurt the Penguins.

Derek Thurston led Clark with 15 points, but was only 1 of 7 on 3-pointers. Rob Perry added 12 points off the bench for the Penguins.

Clark visits Lower Columbia at 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

Clark women win — Chawncy McClenan scored 23 points to lead the Clark women’s basketball team to a 71-62 victory over Green River.

Chelsea Dyson scored 15 points off the bench as the Penguins’ reserves outscored the Gators 23-11. Michelle Marthini grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds, helping Clark (7-5, 4-1 West Division) to a 52-46 advantage on the boards.

Clark coach Nancy Boone noted that her team’s 21 turnovers was an improvement, but said she is looking for a better all-around effort when her team plays at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Lower Columbia.

“We’ve got to play better team offense and stronger team defense,” Boone said.
