Four members of Vancouver Taekwondo Academy won championships during the Oregon Taekwondo Championships, held on Saturday in Portland.

Scott Browning won the sparring title for black belt heavyweight men ages 18-32. Lance Bentley won a junior black belt sparring title for ages 14-17, and Jacob Burggraff won the black belt heavyweight sparring title for ages 12-13.

Burggraff also won his division for forms. Daniel Vroom took third place in forms for the ages 14-18 black belt division.

All four competitors qualify for the USA Taekwondo nationals in July at Orlando. Several Vancouver Taekwondo Academy members will compete at the Washington state taekwondo championships this week in an effort to qualify for nationals.

Lacrosse player picks college

Brock Beall, a Camas High School senior who plays for the King’s Way Christian High School lacrosse team, has committed to play NCAA Division II lacrosse at Dominican University of California.

A first-team all-conference selection as a junior last spring, Beall will lead a King’s Way team that for 2010 has moved into the top-level of high school lacrosse in Washington state.

Because King’s Way is the only high school boys lacrosse program in Southwest Washington, its players can come from any Clark County high school. Its 2010 season begins on March 20.

Dominican University is located in San Rafael, Calif., about 12 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Tennis results listed

Vancouver Tennis Center hosted a junior tournament Jan. 8-10 for boys and girls 18 and younger. Results from the tournament are listed in the Community Sports Scoreboard.

MMA title secured

Roman Wheeler of Vancouver won a state of Washington amateur mixed martial arts title for the 145-pound weight class on Jan. 2 in Longview.

Wheeler, who fights out of Arsenal Combat Sports in Vancouver, won with a first-round technical knockout over Josh Roden.

The bout was part of a Kessler Kage Kombat event at Kessler’s Bar and Grill in Longview and was sanctioned by U.S.A. Mixed Martial Arts, according to Brent Wheeler, Roman’s father and coach.

Arsenal Combat Sports recently opened a mixed martial arts gym in the Westfield Vancouver mall.
