TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey’s new governor says “change has arrived” and promises to make a difference as he takes the state in a “new direction.”

With his family at his side, Republican Chris Christie took the oath of office in Trenton on Tuesday.

The state’s 55th governor defeated Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine in November largely by stressing taxes and economy.

In his inaugural address, Christie said “a new era of lower taxes and higher growth will begin.” Christie also says he wants to restrain government, help businesses and cut red tape.

Kim Guadagno (GWAH’-dah-noh) was sworn in as the state’s first lieutenant governor, a new position in the state.
