Prep roundup: Big second half sparks Union boys to 3-0 start

The Union boys basketball team scored 56 points in the second half to pull away from Hudson’s Bay on Tuesday for a 90-77 win, improving to 3-0 in the Class 3A Greater St. Helens League standings.

Chris Morgan scored 25 points, Caleb Whalen had 19 points and seven rebounds, Kyle Holmes scored all 14 of his points in the second half, and Garett Speyer connected on four 3-pointers to pace the Titans.

Gabe Foster led the Eagles (9-4, 1-2) with 24 points. Tra Ponder added 15, Danny Christensen scored 14, and Derrick Brooks made three 3-pointers.

Union led by two at the half. The Titans got the lead to 14 early in the third quarter. The Eagles cut the deficit to four points before Union went on another run to extend the lead. The Titans, who shot 53 percent from the floor in the game, scored 31 points in the fourth quarter.

Prairie 71, Fort Vancouver 64 — The Falcons made five 3-point shots in the fourth quarter, three of them by T.J. Williams, as they pulled away for the victory.

The game was close throughout. The score was tied after one quarter; Prairie led by one point at halftime; and it was tied again after three quarters. That’s when the Falcons unleashed their 3-point attack.

“We just didn’t have an answer,” Fort coach Scott Thompson said.

Prairie finished with 12 2-point field goals and 12 3-pointers. The Falcons also made 11 of 14 free throws, while the Trappers were 4 of 12.

Williams finished with a game-high 20 points, while Scott Brooks added 18 for Prairie and Adam Herman had 17.

John Chen led three Fort Vancouver players in double figures with 16 points.

Camas 65, Columbia River 53 — The Papermakers were on target from long range and the foul line to shoot down the host Chieftains.

Camas hit 10 3-pointers, five from Damon Kosaki who led the Papermakers (8-5, 3-0 GSHL) with 17 points. Camas also made 10 free throws in the fourth quarter, when it outscored River 20-9 to pull away.

Four Camas players scored in double figures, with Addison Owen and Jacob Kaler tallying 14 apiece and Marc Eppinger scoring 13.

Kramer Ramberg led the Chieftains with 15 points. River, who had a four-point lead in the third quarter, fell to 0-3 in league games (7-6 overall).

Columbia Adventist 70, Three Rivers Christian 54 — In Kelso, Landon Roberts scored 29 points to lead the Kodiaks to the Columbia Valley League win.

Girls basketball

Camas 63, Columbia River 55 — Melissa Williams and Katelyn Henson each scored 16 points, and the Papermakers got the best of this contest featuring two 2-0 teams in league play.

Williams and Henson “carried us in the second half,” Camas coach Kurt Thomas said.

The game was close throughout, with Camas getting two 3-pointers in the third quarter from freshman Kendra Preuninger to maintain Camas’ cushion.

Williams added 10 rebounds and three assist to her stat sheet. Haley Smith also had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Kass Cloyd led Columbia River with 15 points. Aimee Bolton added 12 and Laura Luther scored 10 for the Chieftains.

Prairie 72, Fort Vancouver 23 — Ten players scored for the Falcons, led by Jackie Lanz with 15 points. Prairie dominated the middle two quarters. Falcons coach Al Aldridge said his regular starters only played about eight minutes apiece.

Union 43, Hudson’s Bay 41 — Mikyla Ogata scored 15 points and Janae Davis 11 as the visiting Titans won a tight battle. Lexi Gleason led the Eagles with 17 points, and Treneisha Doyle scored 13.

Columbia Adventist 35, Three Rivers Christian 16 — Chianne Hendrix scored 10 points to lead Columbia Adventist
