SEDRO-WOOLLEY, Wash. (AP) — Police say the man killed by a Mount Vernon police officer after a chase ended in Sedro-Woolley had two guns on him — a .45-caliber handgun in hand and another gun in a holster on his body.
Sedro-Woolley Police Chief Doug Wood says the 57-year-old Mount Vernon man got out of his car after the chase Tuesday afternoon and approached the officer. Wood says the officer ordered the man to stop, but he pulled a handgun, forcing the officer to shoot.
The Skagit Valley Herald reports the 32-year-old Mount Vernon officer is on paid leave for the investigation by the sheriff’s office. He recently returned from a nine-month tour of duth with the Navy in the Middle East.
The incident began with the officer attempting to pull over the man for driving erratically.
