PITTSBURGH (AP) — The assets of a western Pennsylvania Navy defense contractor that was suspended from accepting government contracts have been sold to a Canadian firm for $24 million.

API Technologies Corp. of Toronto says it is buying the assets of Kuchera Defense Systems Inc., of Windber, and will maintain and expand the 300-employee operation near Johnstown.

Kuchera was suspended from bidding on military contracts Dec. 22 for allegedly paying more than $200,000 in kickbacks to a prime contractor who pleaded guilty in July to defrauding the government in federal court in Pensacola, Fla.

The company’s suspension was lifted Wednesday to clear the way for Thursday’s deal. Brothers Bill and Ronald Kuchera, who were also suspended, are leaving the business they founded.
