No autopsy answers in fatal Ore. shooting case

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — An autopsy of a suburban Portland man who went on a fatal November shooting rampage before he was shot and killed by police offers no conclusive clues to his actions.

Oregon State Medical Examiner Karen Gunson and her team were so surprised at the results of their autopsy on Shawn Schumacher that they sought a second opinion. Blood tests from National Medical Services in Pennsylvania confirmed what Gunson found: the 28-year-old Hillsboro man had only marijuana in his system, not the peyote or mescaline that police found in his apartment.

Said Gunson, “I thought we would find something, given his history.”

On Nov. 21, Schumacher fatally shot 56-year-old Danny LeGore, who was in a car near a Hillsboro intersection. With police in pursuit, Schumacher then sped away in his own vehicle, colliding with a van in the town of Cornelius. Schumacher got out of his car, with a gun in each hand, and began shooting at police. The officers returned fire, killing him.

The district attorney’s office has said the officers were justified in defending themselves.
