SEATTLE (AP) — The man accused of raping two women and stabbing one to death at their home tried to fire his lawyers during a court hear Friday in Seattle.

The Seattle Times reports King County Superior Court Judge Michael Hayden cleared the courtroom of prosecutors and public to talk with Isaiah Kalebu (kuh-LAY’-boo) and his attorneys. When the courtroom reopened the judge said the defense lawyers will stay on the case.

The 24-year-old is charged with aggravated murder, attempted murder and rape in an attack July 19 at a South Park home. Teresa Butz was killed and the other woman escaped.

The King County prosecutor’s office has extended the deadline for deciding whether to seek the death penalty to April 29 to give Kalebu’s lawyers more time to prepare mitigating information.
