Tentative deal reached for I-90 light rail

SEATTLE (AP) — A tentative deal has been reached to allow light rail trains to take over the existing express lanes of the Interstate 90 bridge across Lake Washington.

The deal reached Thursday between the state Department of Transportation and Sound Transit would require the regional transit agency to spend $153 million to create replacement lanes for buses and carpools. The plan calls for light rail construction to start on the bridge in 2015, and the carpool lanes on the outer roadways of the bridge must be ready before then.

The Sound Transit board is to vote in a few months on a detailed agreement.
