Community notebook: Half marathon was a record-setter

Sunday was a record-breaking day at the Vancouver Lake Half Marathon.

A record 407 runners and walkers completed the 13.1-mile footrace, which started and finished at Vancouver Lake Park. The previous record was 347 finishers in 2003, according to event organizer Russ Zornick.

Complete results from Sunday’s race are in the Community Sports Scoreboard. Zornick noted that seven of the first 11 men to finish were Clark County residents, including champion Jesse McChesney, who finished in 1 hour, 9 minutes and 37 seconds.

Kelly Jaske of Portland broke a 10-year-old course record for women. The 33-year-old finished seventh overall in 1:12:48. That was about 5½ minutes faster than the previous record for a woman, and more than nine minutes faster than Jaske’s time in the 2008 Vancouver Lake Half Marathon.

She did not run the 2009 race because of a broken foot, which she suffered racing to second place in the USA Track and Field Half Marathon Championship. This year, Jaske placed eighth among women in the national championship half marathon, which took place a week before the Vancouver Lake race.

The date for the 2011 Vancouver Lake Half Marathon likely won’t be determined until November, Zornick said. If Clark County closes Vancouver Lake Park again next winter, the race likely will be moved to late March.

The park is closed until spring for budget reasons, but because the race was scheduled before the closure was announced, the event went ahead as planned.

Four other Fisticuffs fighters went to Tacoma, but were unable to fight for a state title because there was no competition at their division. Chance Coogle, 11, was unopposed at 82 pounds, and Apprentice King, 11, was unopposed at 94 pounds.

Chris Cabe, 11, won a bout against a Tacoma opponent at 93 pounds. And Mario Antonio Pacheco, 13, lost a decision in a non-championship match.

Youth wins TKD title

Benjamin Couch became the fifth member of the Vancouver Taekwondo Academy to qualify for the USA Taekwondo national championships when he won his championship match at the USA Taekwondo Washington State Championships.

Couch won the ages 12-13 black belt boys heavyweight division.

Four Vancouver Taekwondo Academy athletes previously qualified for the nationals by winning Oregon state titles. The nationals will take place in July in Orlando, Fla.
