RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A new book by a former aide to John Edwards says he and the two-time presidential candidate solicited money to keep Edwards’ pregnant mistress out of the public spotlight.

Andrew Young details the money trail in his new book “The Politician.”

Young says he and Edwards solicited money from Bunny Mellon, the widow of banking heir Paul Mellon.

She began sending checks “for many hundreds of thousands of dollars” hidden in boxes of chocolates.

Young says he took the money and used it to keep mistress Rielle Hunter happy, hiding her from the media and Edwards’ cancer-stricken wife.

A federal grand jury is investigating Edwards’ campaign finances. Young testified last year.

Both Young and Mellon’s attorney say the now-99-year-old widow did not know how her money was being used.
