Tonight’s exhibit opening at the Clark County Historical Museum will celebrate local contemporary women artists.

The new exhibit — “Expressions of Community: Women Embracing Art” — opens with a chance to meet the artists at a 6 p.m. reception at the museum, 1511 Main St. The reception is free and open to the public.

The exhibit will feature paintings, beadwork, quilts, sculpture, basketry and other media by 10 local artists.

According to Maureen Andrade, artistic director as well as participating artist, “The show exhibits some of the work done by women in our greater community. These are women who have jobs, families, and personal goals. While balancing the needs of others with their own needs, they have created works of art that reflect on women’s work throughout history.”

Next week, the museum launches its 2010 “First Thursday” lecture series with “First Family Voices.” The 7 p.m. program on Thursday, Feb. 4, presents the stories of black families that settled in Vancouver during World War II through the voices of high school students.

The “First Thursday” series, which runs from February through November, is free and open to the public.
