SEATTLE (AP) — A count of homeless people on the streets of King County early Friday found 2,759 people in doorways, cars, and makeshift camp sites.

The Seattle-King County Coalition for the Homeless says that’s 5 percent fewer than last year’s count. The count does not include about 6,000 people staying in emergency shelters and transitional housing.

The count was conducted by 978 volunteers who covered the streets of Bothell, Bellevue, Renton and other suburbs as well as Seattle.

The annual homeless count in January is used by government departments and social service agencies that help the homeless.
