PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Portland police say a man who apparently took a woman and two children hostage has been fatally shot.
Neighbors tell The Oregonian that police took the woman and children to safety before the shooting Friday afternoon.
Detective Mary Wheat says police made contact with the man, shots were fired, and the man died outside a northeast Portland apartment. She would not confirm whether he shot himself or was shot by officers. She says no one else was injured.
Wheat says dispatchers got word that a man with a gun was holding hostages at the Sandy Terrace Apartments and was threatening suicide.
