Try This: History by lantern light

Visitors can take a rare look at life at Fort Vancouver after dark when the annual lantern tours continue tonight.

Each adult attending can carry a lantern while touring the counting house, fur store, kitchen, chief factor’s house and bake house with a park ranger. Visitors will learn about what activities took place after dark at the fort and what it was like to live by lantern light.

When: 7 tonight. Additional lantern tours will be offered Feb. 6 and Feb. 20.

Where: Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, 1001 E. Fifth St., Vancouver.

Admission: $10, $7 for children 15 and younger. Reservations are required.

The tour is just one of several weekend entertainment options in Clark County and Portland. Others include the Clark College Jazz Festival and a new exhibit debuting at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry.

1. Clark College jazzes it up

The Clark College Jazz Festival wraps up today. The festival features 60 high school vocal and instrumental jazz ensembles from throughout Washington and Oregon.

Jazz competitions are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and final competitions begin at 7 p.m.

The Clark College Jazz Ensemble will perform at noon today.

The 2009 Sweepstakes Band, Roosevelt Jazz Band I, will perform at 9 tonight.

Admission: $5. Clark College students and children 11 and younger accompanied by an adult receive free admission.

2. Art exhibit wraps up

An art exhibit featuring new works wraps up today at downtown Vancouver’s Art on the Boulevard.

Mitch Baird is one of the artists with work on display. Baird works to capture qualities and nuances of natural light and color harmony in the scenes he paints.

New works will also be on display from several gallery artists, including Elsbeth McLeod, Eric Jacobsen, Chuck Gumpert, Harry Wheeler and Oleg Ulitskiy.

3. OMSI delves into outer space

The latest exhibit at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, “Space: A Journey to Our Future,” opens today and continues through May 31. The exhibit examines the history of the space program, brings to life current projects in space exploration and provides a glimpse of future human space travel.

Visitors can see a variety of artifacts from space programs past and present, including space suits and shuttle tiles. Visitors can also use interactive displays to design their own trip to Mars.

Hours: 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays.

Where: 1945 S.E. Water Ave., Portland.

Admission: $11; $9 for seniors 63 and older and children 3-13; $2 on the first Sunday of each month. Additional costs for some shows, submarine tour and planetarium shows.

4. Bell looks for love in ‘Rome’

A young woman (Kristen Bell) on vacation takes a few magic coins from a fountain in “When in Rome,” in theaters this weekend.

The fountain happens to be magical, and by taking the coins, the woman draws the interest of a variety of characters (including Danny DeVito, Jon Heder, Will Arnett and Dax Shepard). But when a reporter draws her eye, she wonders if she’s found true love.

“When in Rome” is rated PG-13.
