PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — A U.S. official says the rubble remaining from destroyed buildings in Haiti’s capital could easily fill to the top five football stadiums the size of New Orleans’ Superdome.
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Col. Rick Kaiser says that’s by “conservative estimates.”
He said Saturday that Haiti’s government could put the rubble to good use — perhaps building an artificial reef to augment fishing, or using it as landfill to reinforce Haiti’s eroded mountains and ravines to prevent deadly mudslides.
Kaiser is in charge of a joint task force of U.S. Military, Air Force and Navy engineers responding to immediate emergency needs in Haiti.
Authorities estimate there are 20 million cubic yards of debris from the earthquake.
