Gas leak response continues near Lacamas Lake

A contingent of Northwest Natural employees are continuing door-to-door visits this morning to relight pilot lights shut off after a natural-gas pipe leak near the west end of Lacamas Lake in the Camas area.

The leak was caused by a construction worker who bored into a 4-inch distribution pipe that afternoon near Lake Road and Northwest Jackson Street, just north of Skyridge Middle School, officials said.

Gas valves were closed shortly after 5 p.m. in response to the leak.

Beginning at 8 a.m. this morning, Northwest Natural technicians have made contact with 90 of the 330 homes affected, said Jenna Gross-Cooper, a Northwest Natural spokeswoman.

Gross-Cooper said pilot lights were re-lit at homes where residents were present. If they were out, a hanger was left on their door with a pledge to return. Gross-Cooper said 14 technicians are sweeping through the area.

The damaged pipe was repaired by about 11 p.m. Wednesday night.

Access to the Forest Hills subdivision remains limited as a safety precaution. A short section of Lake Road between Jackson and Parker streets remains blocked.

As of 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, several hours after the pipe break, no one had been reported injured or sickened by the gas, said Battalion Chief Larry Larimer with the Camas Fire Department.
