Italy sees intermediate steps at UN climate summit

ROME (AP) — Italy’s environment minister says an upcoming U.N. climate summit won’t broker a global accord on climate change, but may represent a step towards such an agreement.

Minister Stefania Prestigiacomo spoke Thursday after two days of talks with the Major Economies Forum, a group created last year to prod the slow-moving U.N. negotiations along.

Prestigiacomo said delegates at the summit later this year in Cancun, Mexico, will try to develop a framework that can serve as a basis for a future global accord.

A December summit in Copenhagen, Denmark fell far short of the goal of a full-fledged and legally binding accord setting emission reduction targets for major countries. Expectations for Mexico have been lowered as a result.
