LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jurors have begun deliberating in the trial of a former San Francisco Bay area transit officer accused of murdering an unarmed black man during an altercation on an Oakland train platform last year.

The panel was given the case Friday after attorneys gave their closing arguments in the trial of Johannes Mehserle. If jurors find Mehserle guilty, they will have to decide between second-degree murder, voluntary manslaughter and involuntary manslaughter.

Mehserle, who is white, has pleaded not guilty to murder in the shooting of 22-year-old Oscar Grant after a fight drew officers to the Fruitvale station.

Grant was shot while lying face down on the platform, as bystanders videotaped the New Year’s Day 2009 incident.

The trial was moved to Los Angeles from Alameda County.
