Man may lose fingers following fireworks explosion

— A Vancouver man may lose some of his fingers after he was injured by the blast Sunday night of a modified firecracker.

Firefighters arrived near the 7400 block of Northeast 121st Avenue shortly after 10:30 p.m. on the Fourth of July to find a man in his early 40s with “multiple broken bones and possible loss of fingers,” said Kevin Murray, a captain with the Vancouver Fire Department.

An 8-year-old boy suffered minor injuries as well, Murray said. The two patients were transported to Southwest Washington Medical Center by separate American Medical Response ambulances.

Murray said both a paramedic and a firefighter traveled with the injured man, who was said to have suffered “a serious jolt.”

Clark County Fire Marshal’s investigators who responded said they believe the explosion was triggered by modifications made to the firework.

“When you’re lighting off home fireworks, you’re still dealing with explosives,” Murray said. “I don’t know how much this guy did to make it go boom, but obviously enough to harm himself and this 8-year-old boy.”

Because of privacy laws, the names of the man and boy were not released.
