A 21-year-old man made his first court appearance Tuesday after being arrested over the weekend on suspicion of vehicular homicide.

Clark County Superior Court Judge Barbara Johnson set bail at $500,000 and appointed attorney Therese Lavallee to represent David W. Moss-Van Soest of La Center.

Moss-Van Soest was arrested following a Saturday night crash that killed motorcyclists Steven W. Dodd, 35, and Karey Brown, 34.

Dodd and Brown, both described by deputies as experienced riders wearing the appropriate safety gear, were killed only 200 feet from their home.

Court documents allege Moss-Van Soest showed signs of alcohol intoxication after the crash and told deputies he “shouldn’t have been driving.”

Court records show Moss-Van Soest has two driving while suspended charges pending in Clark County District Court. Those offenses allegedly occurred in April and May.

Deputies said the suspect’s blood was drawn after Saturday’s arrest but results weren’t immediately available.

The crash happened about 11:50 p.m., when the couple were riding their motorcycles eastbound in the 1600 block of Northwest La Center Road and were struck head-on by Moss-Van Soest’s 1990 Dodge Shadow sedan, which allegedly crossed the centerline.

Moss-Van Soest later told deputies that the crash had happened when he “looked down for a second,” according to court documents.

Moss-Van Soest and his passenger, Billy Backus, were treated for minor injuries. Moss-Van Soest suffered a laceration on his finger as well as facial abrasions and shoulder bruising.
