Battle Ground, Meadow Glade and Hockinson

Battle Ground: Anna Downs and Kevin Stamper appeared as white and purple dots in a sea of black caps and gowns at the Battle Ground High School graduation ceremony on June 18. The two Heritage High School students were invited to walk with Battle Ground when they missed their own graduation ceremony after being hit by a driver who was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving. “The best part was when their names were announced and they walked across the stage … the entire Battle Ground graduating class stood and cheered for them. It was awesome,” Diana Downs, Anna’s stepmother, said in an e-mail.

Hazel Dell, Felida and Salmon Creek

Felida: Firefighters from Fire District 6 worked with the National Safe Kids Campaign and McDonald’s to recognize kids for wearing a helmet while participating in a nonmotorized wheeled activity: biking, in-line skating, roller skating and skateboarding. Firefighters gave kids “Safe Rider Citations” that could be traded in for an ice cream cone at McDonald’s.

Salmon Creek: More than 1,500 children, parents and grandparents attended the fifth annual Healthy Kids Fair at Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center on June 12. Twenty community partners from the surrounding community participated, doing everything from face painting to fire-safety tips. The fair also offered low-cost bicycle helmets, 500 of which were sold and fitted. Eighty child-safety seats that were damaged or expired were recycled, and 30 child-safety seats were checked to make sure they were being used properly.

West Hazel Dell: Jessica M. Doan, a junior at Columbia River High School, was selected to be one of 1,100 attendees at West Point’s Summer Leaders Seminar this summer. Doan will live in the cadet barracks, eat in the mess hall and participate in academic, leadership, athletic and military workshops. More than 4,000 juniors from across the country applied for the program.

Salmon Creek: The Salmon Creek Sluggers 13 U baseball team completed its third annual “Give Back to the Community” project. This year, players collected new and gently used books and donated them to the Share House. The team collected 1,120 books.

Orchards, Sifton and Brush Prairie

Brush Prairie: Tim McCarthy, a 2010 graduate of Prairie High School, was one of 70 students nationwide to be invited to attend the National Symphony Orchestra’s Summer Music Institute. The SMI is June 28 through July 26 at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.

Orchards Park: Twenty Walgreens employees spent June 14 scouring trash from the landscape of Orchards Park, 9800 N.E. 54th St. Ryan Clark, a local store manager, organized volunteers from four branches to give the well-used park a sprucing up, and families and friends pitched in, too. They filled 11 trash bags. “We really appreciate all their hard work,” said Vancouver-Clark Parks and Recreation volunteer coordinator Teresa Fernandez. The parks department welcomes individuals and groups interested in helping with parks and trails. Visit http://vanclarkparks-rec.org or call Fernandez, 360-619-1124.

West Vancouver and Downtown

Shumway: The Clark County YWCA held a successful summer social June 15. There was a live jug band, food and a focus on the Y’s child care program. A total of $70,565 was raised to sustain programs serving victims of domestic violence, homelessness, child abuse, neglect, oppression and sexual assault. The Y is on upper Main Street; the event was at Pearson Air Museum.

Uptown Village: The annual Uptown Movie Nights series that’s been put on every summer since 2002 by a team of west-side neighborhood volunteers has sputtered. “The hope is to bring it back next year, but the event really needs some new volunteers and sponsors, something we just couldn’t pull together in time this year,” said Amy McFall Prince. The weekly summer movie series used to screen free, family-friendly titles such as “Back to the Future” and “The Muppets Take Manhattan” on the big, white exterior wall of the LSW Architects building on Main Street.

East Vancouver, Cascade Park, Fisher’s Landing and Evergreen

Mountain View: Mountain View High School’s Math, Engineering and Science Achievement team placed third in the technical paper portion of the National MESA competition June 25-27 in Denver. In the paper, students discussed the physics, math, science, testing, findings and procedure for testing of the device they made to harness wind energy. Third place was a significant accomplishment considering English was the second language for the team, said Armetta Burney, co-director of Southwest Washington MESA. Team members are Arnikan Baleswaran, Arranan Baleswaran, Dilshan Mendis, and Jonathan Wu. Seven states were represented at the national competition, each state brought a middle school and high school team.

East Clark County: Camas and Washougal

Camas: Allison Knight graduated from Camas School District on June 11 with a perfect attendance record. Throughout high school, she also attended seminary before school. Allison’s older sister, Hillary, graduated in 2008 having accomplished the same attendance record.
