MONROE, Wash. (AP) — A program that uses prisoners to train rescued dogs for jobs as service animals graduated its first class Wednesday of four dogs at the Monroe Correctional Complex.

Eight inmates worked with the dogs through a two-month program for Summit Assistance Dogs, an Anacortes nonprofit.

The Daily Herald of Everett reports the first four from Monroe probably won’t make the final grade as service animals. But the training improves their chances of being adopted.

Officials also believe there are benefits for the inmates who learn responsibility and patience.
