LAS VEGAS (AP) — The top prize at the World Series of Poker is nearing $9 million as the main event has its second-most entries ever.

More than 2,300 players entered the no-limit Texas Hold ’em tournament Thursday on the last day to buy in for $10,000. That pushed the tournament past 7,200 total players with registration open until its fifth hour of play.

Celebrities including actor Jason Alexander and NFL great Emmitt Smith mingled with opponents and dealers while hoping to earn some piece of a more than $68 million prize pool.

The tournament will see a double-digit percentage increase in entrants compared with last year, but will fall short of the field of 8,773 seen in 2006. Jamie Gold won that tournament for $12 million.
