LUSS, Scotland (AP) — Phil Mickelson won’t be going to No. 1 in the world this week. His first goal was make the cut at the Scottish Open.

Mickelson hit three drives before he could get one in play on the 18th hole Friday, making a quintuple-bogey 9 in the middle of his round at the Scottish Open. He never recovered and finished with a 74. He does not expect to make the cut.

This was the fifth tournament in which Mickelson has had a chance to replace Tiger Woods atop the world ranking by winning.

If there’s a bright side, missing the cut means Mickelson can spend two days at St. Andrews getting ready for next week’s British Open.
