Board sides with UO’s riverfront plan

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — The state’s Land Use Board of Appeals has given the University of Oregon another three years to construct buildings at the Riverfront Research Park along the Willamette River.

That’s the spot where the university hopes to build the Oregon Research Institute. The project has drawn strong opposition because it would be the first in the 67-acre park to be built directly on the riverfront and north of the railroad tracks that divide the site.

Opponents challenged the city of Eugene’s decision to extend a 20-year conditional use permit by another three years.

They say that although Thursday’s decision upholds the extension, the university still can choose to build on a less controversial site.
