TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — The vandalism of a police car in Tacoma is apparently part of a protest against an Oakland, Calif., case that raised racial tensions.

KING-TV reports a Tacoma police officer awoke about 2:30 a.m. Friday to the sound of windows being smashed in the patrol car parked outside his home.

The officer chased off two men wearing hooded sweat shirts. The damaged police car had been spray-painted with the words “Oscar Grant was here.”

Grant, an unarmed black man, was shot and killed by a white transit officer in on New Year’s Day in 2009 on an Oakland train platform.

He had been charged with murder but was convicted Thursday of involuntary manslaughter at a trial in Los Angeles, setting off protests and vandalism overnight in Oakland.
