Artists at the in-home Stray Art Gallery arrived Thursday night to find two large paintings had been taken.

The paintings by Sheila Hutchison and April Bullard, two artists on the seven-member board, were gone. The gallery’s sign was missing as well. The theft was discovered at about 6 p.m.

“It’s really strange, because there’s no sign of forced entry,” Hutchison said. “We’re really baffled.”

Hutchison said the landlord of the gallery, located at 1706 W. Columbia St., changed the locks Thursday night after the theft was discovered. It has been reported to the Vancouver Police Department.

The first show at the gallery was Friday, July 2.

A watercolor painting Hutchison said she did in college — a still life with fruit — was gone, as was an acrylic painting Bullard had done of “this beautiful Gothic woman behind a gate with a white robe,” Hutchison said.

Anyone with information on either painting is asked to call Hutchison at 835-7419.
