MARYSVILLE, Wash. (AP) — Marysville School Board member Michael Kundu who had been accused of racism resigned before Monday night’s meeting.

Other board members had called for his resignation for suggesting in a June 3 e-mail that race is a factor in intelligence.

Kundu denied accusations of racism and defended his six-year record on the board.

The Daily Herald of Everett reports Kundu urged the school board to use best available science to find ways to close a minority achievement gap. He concluded his resignation letter by urging the board to create a permanent seat for a tribal member. About 9 percent of the district’s 12,000 students are Indians.
