State seeking owners of unclaimed WaMu accounts
Wednesday, July 14, 2010
The Washington Department of Revenue is holding $9.8 million in deposits from former Washington Mutual customers who didn’t claim their accounts after the bank failed in 2008.
While JP Morgan Chase received most of WaMu’s accounts, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. held onto accounts that were inactive for at least three years.
The FDIC last week transferred the funds held by Washington customers to the state, which has since sent letters to the last-known address of account holders with more than $75 in unclaimed deposits, said Mike Gowrylow, a Department of Revenue spokesman.
The state has 10 years to find the account owners before the funds revert to the FDIC, he said. To find and claim your missing WaMu account, search the state’s unclaimed property database at http://dor.wa.gov or http://claimyourcash.org.
