NEW YORK (AP) — Susan Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, says “sports remind us what humanity has in common.”

This year’s WNBA Inspiration Award honoree, Rice received the honor at a luncheon Wednesday in Manhattan.

WNBA president Donna Orender says she wanted to choose someone who had a strong background in social and cultural issues. Orender calls Rice “a perfect choice.”

The event focused on the plight of girls in developing countries. WNBA Cares will partner with Girl Up, a U.N. Foundation program that helps girls around the world.

Rice is the fourth individual to receive the award. Previous recipients include former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
