Threatened with K-9 bite, man emerges from bushes

A man who ran from police and hid in some bushes not far from East Mill Plain and Grand boulevards decided against being bitten by a tracking dog late Wednesday night, and surrendered, police say.

About 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, an officer with the Safe Streets Task Force was at some apartments near Gillis Street, one block east of Grand, said Officer Jason Beach with the Vancouver Police Department.

The officer wasn’t looking for 30-year-old Ruben Sandoval Castillo, but recognized him and knew a felony warrant had been issued for his arrest, Beach said.

Police say Castillo ran off, so several officers took positions around the area and called for Officer Roger Evans and his tracking dog, Eron.

When Evans arrived in the area, he and Eron tracked Castillo to a spot only a short distance from where he ran from the officer, Beach said.

Officer Evans then yelled out the standard K-9 warning, often heard on police scanners monitored at The Columbian, that, if Castillo didn’t surrender in five seconds, “the dog will be sent to find you and, if he finds you, he’ll bite you.”

Castillo then emerged from a back yard where he’d been hiding in some bushes and surrendered, Beach said.

Very early Thursday morning, Sandoval Castillo was being held without bail for a warrant charging he violated Superior Court sentencing terms after a conviction for forgery, and for other violations as well, a Clark County Jail officer said.

Sandoval Castillo, a Vancouver resident, has two court appearances scheduled for Thursday.
